A male driver involved in a freak accident in Bloemfontein yesterday (31/08), at about 17:00, is recovering at a local hospital. He escaped with minor injuries while the female driver of the second vehicle involved in the accident, was unharmed.
Emergency medical care rushed the injured driver to Life Rosepark Hospital for treatment to injuries he sustained during the crash.
The incident left the male driver’s silver Nissan Micra beyond repair. The left rear wheel and rear window of his car came clean off in the event of the crash. The car’s fuel tank also appeared to be impacted as petrol was dripping onto the ground from under the irreparably damaged car.
The accident occurred during peak hour near the traffic lights at the Nelson Mandela Drive and Markgraaff Street intersection.
A visibly shocked eyewitness reacted saying: “It’s a lucky escape, especially the guy.”
The male driver’s car had quickly spun around before crashing against the pavement on the side of Markgraaff Street. It came to a standstill across the road in question. Traffic was diverted to alternative routes.
According to the eyewitness, the male driver was travelling west in Nelson Mandela Drive when the Polo, driving south in Markgraaff Street, allegedly came crashing into the rear door of the Nissan, causing it to quickly spin around.
The eyewitness states the traffic lights were functioning properly at the time, and there was no loadshedding to blame as the possible cause of the accident.
