Free State Agriculture (FSA) has called on government and all livestock owners to intensify preventative measures against foot-and-mouth disease.
This clarion call to vaccinate livestock comes in the wake of a positive test in the province.
Thembeni Nxangisa, Free State MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development, confirmed the case early in April.
“Livestock farmers must not move or buy uncertified livestock,” said Francois Wilken, president of the FSA.
“The FSA calls for strict biosecurity on all workers on the infected farms. This will be done by restricting movement and disinfecting clothes.”
He has further called on government to strictly enforce quarantine restrictions and implement the biosecurity report’s recommendations to prevent any further spread of the disease.
Wilken also encouraged livestock farmers to adhere to measures and vaccination campaigns put in place by the veterinary services.
