The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport has announced that cashless payments will be effective from 1 December across testing stations and registering offices in the province.
No cash payments will be accepted from the date in question onwards. The public will only be able to use debit or credit cards.
The new system will be rolled out in phases.
“The decision was taken after numerous break-ins were reported at various offices of facilities that handle cash payments,” explained Hillary Mophethe, spokesperson for the department.
“In general, the safety of clients and officials will be secured, as the cashless system will ensure that would-be thieves will now have no incentive to rob offices or attack individuals to take their cash.”
