The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (Destea) has appointed two experienced individuals for repositioning.

They are Mojalefa Mphapang, director of communications and information technology, succeeding Kgotso Tau, who took over as director of tourism development and support. The latter has replaced Motsheoa Mahlatsi, who resigned from the position.

The vastly experienced pair took office on 12 December, on permanent basis. Their work experience in government communication spans over 26 and 18 years, respectively.

Tau’s career spans from serving the national Department of Public Works, in the Free State premier’s office during the term of Winkie Direko. He also had a lengthy spell with the now defunct football club Free State Stars.

Mphapang joined the provincial department in June last year.

He had served in various capacities in numerous departments in both the Free State and Northern Cape before.

He first served as communications officer for the Free State Department of Health and then assistant director for communications services at the provincial treasury. He later moved to the Northern Cape Provincial Treasury, where he served as the head of communications.

Mphapang returned to the Free State as the communications manager of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

“The department seeks to ensure consistent communication between the government and the community,” said MEC Makalo Mohale.

“The communications unit plays a critical role.”
