With most levels hovering above 100%, dams in the Free State are expected to see consumers through the winter.
According to the latest data recorded by the Department of Water and Sanitation, the collective level of storage dams in the province is 105,2%.
The healthy levels, as a result of good rainfall since November 2021, have seen sluice gates opened at the Sterkfontein Dam to bring this dam’s water level to 101%.
The Bloemfontein water supply system, which supplies the greater Mangaung Metro Municipality and surrounding areas, stood at 100,6% following heavy rainfall in recent weeks. The Rustfontein Dam and Groothoek Dam are at 101,0% and 98,9%, respectively.
Less than ten years ago, these dams were below 30% capacity during a period of drought. After being closed for three years due to the drought, the Groothoek Dam reopened in 2018.
