The killing of Olebogeng Mosime (8) by a neighbour’s pet pitbull terrier in Vista Park, Bloemfontein, has renewed consciousness about the necessity for dog owners be vigilant.
It is alleged that the dog mauled the boy to death after escaping from its enclosure and jumping over the fence separating the two properties around 14:00 on Saturday (12/11).
Bloemfontein police shot the animal after establishing that the boy had died from the alleged attack.
Olebogeng’s mauling can be considered as adding to the list of children who have fallen prey to dog attacks.
In August 2018, Leah Smartryk was mauled to death by a pitbull terrier at the Lewende Woord Church in Faan Ferreira Avenue, Bloemfontein.
The little girl had apparently peeped over a wall into the neighbouring yard.
In the event, the dog managed to grab hold of her and succeeded in pulling her over onto the premises.
