A range of works by a new breed of visual artists from the Free State are on exhibition at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum in Bloemfontein until 13 November.
These works are the finalists for the sixth New Breed Art Competition, financed by Bloemfontein-based law firm Phatshoane Henney Attorneys.
About 111 entries by unknown visual artists were received with 27 artworks making the grade following judging by the panel.
The law firm aims to discover a new breed of talented visual artists and expose them to existing opportunities, so they can realise their dream to become fully-fledged artists.
The exhibition opened on 4 October, showcasing works by 24 artists. The exhibition is also fully virtual and can be viewed on newbreedart.co.za.
In addition to being able to purchase any of the works, members of the public can also vote for their favourite artist.
The five outstanding artists will be announced on 3 November: the overall winner will receive R50 000, the runner-up R20 000 and two merit award winners R10 000 each.
The winner of the public choice award, with the most online votes, will be given R10 000 in prize money. Voting closes on 31 October.
“The selected works traverse many different themes, materials and perspectives with each work bearing strong testimony to the saying art is not what you see, but what you make others see,” said Lesley Mokgoro, chief executive officer of the law firm.
“The judges have in my view set the bar high and in doing so confirmed the importance of the New Breed Art Competition and its very high standard.”
