Club shapes up for national contest

Four boxers of the Bloemfontein-based Devil’s Boxing Club are knocking on the door of the country’s national team.

The young warriors qualified for the upcoming national championship of the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo), to be staged in Durban from 10 to 15 December.

Khumo Ditshidi (15), Pule Moloke (14), Oratile Molelekoa (12) and Obitshepo Finger (15) came out on top in the Free State championship staged in Welkom on 5 November.

The tournament, featuring cadet and junior-level boxers from various stables, was aimed at selecting boxers to represent the Free State at the national championship.

The Bloemfontein foursome disposed of their opponents to secure a place in the provincial team.

David “Treto” Molatlhoe, coach-manager, said he was delighted with four of his five boxers proceeding to the national championship. The fifth boxer, Mpho Tshepe, could not compete, as his opponent withdrew.

Molatlhoe is hopeful for a sterling performance in Durban, and that silverware will be secured – possibly even a gold medal.

“The inclusion of the four in the provincial team serves as motivation for other boxers in the club. We are sharpening our skills for the upcoming national championship already,” said Molatlhoe.

According to him, having candidates in the provincial and national teams ties in with the club’s mission of unearthing and honing top-class fighters capable of conquering competitions.

A strong performance by the foursome could secure them a place in the national team, which will compete in the continental championship.

The club is home to 26 non-professional boxers, male and female.
