The Bloemfontein branch of the International WeLoveU Foundation has thrown its weight behind the global climate change campaign by participating in the Clean World Movement.

Members started a month-long cleaning drive on 22 May, targeting hot spot areas in Willows, Bloemfontein.

The campaign paved the way to mark World Environment Day on 5 June and is aimed at achieving sustainable development, the largest common goal of the international community.

This also followed annual Earth Day observed on 22 April. The day in question marked the start of the environmental movement in 1970, and for the past 52 years has resulted in policy change and a greater awareness of the environment, focusing on Ecosystem Restoration.

Local activists of the global welfare organisation hope to inspire the public to participate by cleaning their environment and change behaviour.

Shane Delport of the foundation said they plan to partner with the Mangaung Metro Municipality to clean the environment.

“Willows is highly populated with waste material and garbage that is being disposed indiscriminately,” said Delport.

Altogether eight members of the foundation dirtied their hands collecting various types of recyclable material ranging from toilet paper, glass and plastic bottles and plastic bags.

They produced 32 bags of waste over two hours.

According to Delport that serves as an indication of the extent of waste generated and the challenge of the lack of environmental awareness.
