A trailblazer in South Africa’s iconic Comrades Marathon, Louis Massyn (75), is gearing up for his 50th appearance in this annual, gruelling race.
The global race takes place on Sunday, 8 June. This is the 49th down run and will start at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finish 12 hours later at Durban’s People’s Park.
This incredible milestone is not just a testament to Massyn’s endurance and dedication, but also an opportunity to give back to the community.
The living legend has partnered with the Binah and Legacy Center non-profit organisations (NPO), two organisation that provide support to children with special needs. Through his participation, Massyn aims to raise funds for this worthy cause and inspire others to join him in making a difference.
Binah, an initiative founded by parents of children with autism, has launched The Legacy Centre, a one-to-one tutoring facility designed to support the unique learning needs of children with special needs in a warm, familial environment.
Driven by personal experience, the founders raise awareness and foster societal acceptance of children with special needs. The Legacy Centre reflects their deep commitment to building a better future . Runners chase deadline
The Legacy Centre offers individualised educational programmes that focuses on each child’s strengths while addressing their specific challenges. With a low-stimulation environment and trained, compassionate staff, the centre provides a safe space where children can thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
In March 2023, the founders expanded their vision by opening Ons Plasie – a residential home for young men with autism on a smallholding in Oudtshoorn. Created as a long-term living solution for their 18-year-old son and others like him, Ons Plasie offers a fulfilling lifestyle where the residents care for sheep, chickens, and a vegetable garden – building skills, confidence, and community.
“This organisation does incredible work in supporting children with special needs, and I am honoured to contribute to their efforts,” said Massyn.
Massyn holds a personal best (PB) time of 6:25, achieved in 1981. He is a true inspiration to runners, and his dedication to giving back to the community is a testament to his character.
The platform Given Gain empowers the public to champion the causes they love and care about. It is for this reason that Massyn listed this campaign on the platform. Patrons can contribute to this worthy cause and make a difference in the lives of children with special needs.
“We are excited to be a part of Louis’ 50th Comrades Marathon journey,” says Mariza van Deventer, Binah and Legacy Center representative.
