The Free State Department of Police, Roads and Transport announced that it has completed its maintenance project that entails the upgrading of bridge number 981 over the Riet River and the R48 access road in Koffiefontein.
This comes after a temporary two-day road closure.
The tender for the upgrading and maintenance project was approved in March 2020 following an evaluation of the condition of the bridge’s steel structure.
The refurbishment and asphalt surfacing of the bridge formed part of the maintenance strategy by the provincial department in question, with the safety of road users at the forefront.
The department’s plans to revamp the bridge and access road was announced by former MEC Sam Mashinini at the beginning of 2020.
