The countdown to Bloem Show’s quadridecacentennial celebration has begun. This largest consumer exhibition in South Africa’s central region is celebrating its 140th year of prominence.

A celebration of this legacy brand’s success will be held from 27 April to 6 May in the Free State capital, Bloemfontein.

It is said the event was originally the brainchild of a group of agriculturalists who undertook the task of assembling an agricultural exhibit in 1883. Thereafter, they persevered to transform the project into a catalyst for socio-economic development and growth, by showcasing numerous activities. The province’s rich soil and pleasant climate made it possible for a thriving agricultural initiative.

The province is known as South Africa’s breadbasket, boasting more than 30 000 farms, which produce over 70% of the country’s grain. After all these years, agriculture remains the core of Bloem Show’s showcasing.

Elmarie Prinsloo, chief executive officer (CEO) of Bloem Show, said plans are in place to make this year’s edition of the festival the most memorable by far.

“The Bloem Show’s jam-packed entertainment programme has new additions and initiatives which cannot be missed this year,” said Prinsloo. She said creativity and innovations, resonating with the event’s longevity, will be on full display during the celebration, spread over ten days.

“There will be a live broadcast for 140 hours in the exhibition space, which has been transformed into a ‘show house’ to resemble the celebration of Bloem Show’s 140 years of existence. More exciting news is that three winners will also get to stay in the house for 24 hours each over the following three days.

“Visitors will be able to have a closer look at the creatives and their innovations from 14:00 on the opening day of 27 April until 3 May at 10:00. Indoor exhibitions at Bloem Show look different this year. With a new layout and different focus areas per hall, the shopping experience will be surprisingly different,” said Prinsloo.

The 140th-year celebration will display creativity in sections of halls that are eco-friendly, ranging from home décor, furniture, gardens, solar, water, outdoor, and camping. These also extend to DIY variables which include clothing, shoes, accessories, and beauty. In addition, there will be an F1 racing simulator, a Makro exhibit, a gaming arcade, and a showcasing of new technological and electronic products.

“The focus for this year’s exhibitions is quality and variety. The creative handicrafts and art division is the largest in South Africa, with 2 065 entries this year. Winners will be announced during the show in their various divisions. This is truly a display of quality and talent,” said Prinsloo.
