The Bloemfontein police have launched a manhunt for a group of armed robbers who bombed two automated teller machines (ATMs) at a Chinese-owned mini-supermarket in the Turflaagte township, Bloemfontein. The men reportedly took an undisclosed amount of money from the bombed ATMs.
The bombing occurred in the early morning today, at about 02:30. The suspects reportedly fled on foot to hide among the houses before the arrival of police at the business, Mi Ning Supermarket Wholesalers, Bakery & Hardware.
Some shocked neighbours to the business said they were awakened by the huge bang of explosive devices blowing up the ATMs. They said shortly after the arrival of the police, they heard gunshots as members of the police and the armed ATM bombers were exchanging fire.
It emerged that forced entry was applied to gain entry to the premises. The suspects gained entry from the back of a connecting business building, cutting the devils fork fence in the process. The building is in ruins following the bombing of the ATMs. A vehicle belonging to the owner was also damaged during the blasting.
The establishment was immediately closed for business as part of the police investigation.
Lt. Col Thabo Covane, spokesperson for the police in Mangaung Metro, said two arrests have been made regarding the bombing at the mini-supermarket.
