A man from Rosendal in the Free State, who allegedly hacked his lover with an axe, has been remanded in custody after a brief appearance in the Rosendal Magistrates’ Court yesterday, 4 July. The suspect, Tlokotsi Macholo (48), is charged with attempted murder after allegedly hacking a 26-year-old woman with an axe during a heated altercation over a love triangle.

WO Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the police in the Thabo Mofutsanyana region, said the court postponed the matter to 11 July as part of the police investigation. He said the victim survived and was discharged from the hospital after being treated for a severe wound in the head.

Mophiring said according to information received, Macholo has a love affair with the victim. He said the violent attack reportedly occurred at the suspect’s place in Mautse, township of Rosendal.

“The domestic violence incident occurred on 27 June at about 19:00. Macholo allegedly hacked the victim with an axe in the head after she caught him cheating with another woman. The victim had visited the suspect when she found him with another woman in the bedroom.

“She confronted him about their relationship, but he allegedly pushed and insulted her. Macholo allegedly took an axe, hacking the victim with it in the head and further strangled her in the event,” said Mophiring.

He said the suspect allegedly tried to attack the victim with a knife.

“The victim managed to walk back to her home, where her sister called an ambulance. She was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment,” said Mophiring.
