Free State and South African star athlete Kesaoleboga Molotsane has taken her influence off the field to fuel advocacy to improve women’s lives in South Africa.
The runner is making a contribution through a self-initiated sanitary product project aimed at helping needy women and girls.
Kesa (30), as the middle-distance runner is affectionately known, said the initiative also advocated for the protection of women’s rights and appreciation.
It aims to curb the severe plight of women and children, worsened by inequality and poverty.
She pointed out that gender-based violence was an added burden to South African women.
“With so much happening in the world, women are the most threatened, especially in South Africa. The scourge of gender-based violence against women and children in this country is extremely intense and the society is faced with the challenge to finding ways to rectify injustices against women due to gender-based violence incidents,” said Molotsane.
In March, which is Human Rights Month, she highlighted the importance of the community taking a stance to protect women during an outreach at the Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein, where she donated sanitary products to women who gave birth in the maternity ward.
This coincided with the observance of International Women’s Day on 8 March, under the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
“As a woman, I have learnt that several women are not privileged to access sanitary towels during their menstrual cycle, hence the choice of donation.
“Other women are faced with fertility nightmares and labour complications. I believe society should encourage the appreciation of women.
“I have dedicated my career to uplifting, supporting, protecting and taking care of women.
“Women are very influential in shaping communities. We need to acknowledge and appreciate them for who they are.”
